‘Living Wall’ Is Part of Fashion Valley Makeover Plans
By LOU HIRSH Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Simon Property Group Inc. is installing a 46-foot-long, 16-foot-tall “living wall” feature at its Fashion Valley mall, to be covered with 4,000 ornamental plants, ferns, grasses and eight different types of ground coverings.

The feature, to be created over the next three months in the mall’s northeast section near The Cheesecake Factory, is the newest component of a $15 million renovation nearing completion at the Mission Valley venue, the mall operator said in a June 19 statement.

“This natural wall will introduce yet another beautifying aspect of our ongoing renovation,” said mall manager Robert Doherty.

The organic artwork was custom-designed by Jerri Pick and Rocco Campanozzi of Mission Landscape Cos., in consultation with Jim Mumford, the statement said. Plants with contrasting textures, foliage type and color will provide various appearances throughout the year. The wall will be installed by GreenScaped Buildings and maintained by their sister company Good Earth Plants after installation.

To date, Fashion Valley’s young plants have been assembled into modules lined with a custom fabric allowing them to grow for a three-month period in a greenhouse as they establish a strong root system. They will be transferred from the nursery and installed on the mall’s wall in a process to last several days beginning in August, the statement said.

Fashion Valley is San Diego County’s largest regional mall. Simon Property Group is the nation’s largest mall operator and among the world’s biggest, with an interest in 338 retail real estate properties in North America and Asia.
